If your first supervisor is a member of Arch\u00e9 and you want to become a member, too, all you need to do is send an e-mail to the Director of Arch\u00e9 archedirector@st-andrews.ac.uk<\/a> asking to be admitted, and you’ll become a member by default.<\/p>\n

If your first supervisor is not a member of Arch\u00e9 and you want to become a member, you’ll still send an email to the Director and we’ll take it from there. Normally, the Arch\u00e9 Management Committee will decide on your request on the basis of whether your main research topic is within Arch\u00e9\u2019s remit, or you want to work with other Arch\u00e9 members on a regular basis, or so.<\/p>\n

Arch\u00e9 membership brings many benefits. Arch\u00e9 provides office space for its graduate students, who interact on a daily basis with other Arch\u00e9 researchers<\/a>, and are encouraged to approach any Arch\u00e9 member at any time for feedback on their work. In return, Arch\u00e9 graduate students are expected to participate fully in Arch\u00e9\u2019s activities, by attending seminars from the active Arch\u00e9 streams, assisting with minute-taking, helping to organise events, and attending meetings of the Arch\u00e9 Council. Arch\u00e9 students are expected to regularly<\/em> attend seminars from two<\/em> streams.<\/p>\n

Graduate students are welcome to work within any of Arch\u00e9\u2019s current research projects<\/a>, or on any other topic within Arch\u00e9\u2019s broader remit (Logic, Language, Metaphysics and Epistemology). Becoming an Arch\u00e9 graduate in no way restricts a student\u2019s intellectual freedom: Arch\u00e9 students may begin working on topics within Arch\u00e9\u2019s remit, then find later that their work leads them into another area. Such students remain members of Arch\u00e9, but have the benefit of interaction with other members of the Philosophy Departments whose interests converge with their own. Arch\u00e9 PhD Students remain full members of the Philosophy Departments: they have normal access to its facilities and involvement in its activities.<\/p>\n
