About this course
Join us for a five-day comprehensive music recording and production course that goes in-depth into the art of music recording and production.
You will receive step-by-step guidance on how to record and produce a piano ballad song with a contemporary band and string quartet in the spectacular setting of the state-of-the-art Laidlaw Music Centre.
Learn the art of audio mixing and mastering from industry professionals and turn your mixes into professional records.
In addition to the valuable knowledge and experience you will gain, you will also have access to the full project and multitrack from the session so you can create your own production and mix for use in your showreel portfolio.
Experience setting up live PA, multitrack recording of a live show, live streaming and mixing and mastering audio recorded live.
Who is this course for?
This course is for upcoming record producers, aspiring recording engineers, aspiring mix and mastering engineers and everyone in between who would like to produce their own records.
Are you at an intermediate level in music recording and production and would like to learn more and improve your skills, or a beginner and would like individual tuition on using microphones, Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software and plugins?

How the course will be taught
Instructors will use a variety of industry-standard Digital Audio Workstations (DAW), hardware and software.
We will explore technologies and techniques used by professional studio producers and engineers.
We will empower you with the necessary skills to professionally produce and engineer the music you love.
What to expect
- Spend five days exploring the art of music recording, production and post-production with industry practitioners in a combination of live performance spaces and professional recording studio environments.
- You will boost confidence in recording techniques, the use of a DAW, editing and music mixing and mastering.
- Understand the thought processes of a producer and a recording engineer in a professional recording studio.
- Dive deep into areas such as microphone technique and compression settings to develop your skills in signal flow.
- Learn audio mixing and mastering from industry professionals.
- Learn more about live PA and live recording/streaming.
- Full project and multitrack for personal showreel use.
- Q&A after each session.

Course requirements
- No previous audio recording experience for beginner students.
- Understanding of a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) use required for attending sessions designed for advanced students.
- Attendees can change their mind about whether they want to attend beginner or advanced sessions as the course progresses.

Registration fee

The course fee includes travel to and back from First Cut Music Studio on Day 4 from the Laidlaw Music Centre.
Refreshments will be provided throughout the duration of the course.

Course tutors
Tutor
Dr. Jonathan A. Kemp, physicist and musician at the University of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, holds a BSc in Physics with Music and a PhD in brass acoustics and a teachers diploma in electric guitar. He researches guitar string acoustics, teaches the University of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø modules MU2002 Scottish Music, MU2004 Electornic Music and PH4036 Physics of Music, and is Head of Music Technology at the Laidlaw Music Centre. He plays bass, guitar, banjo and mandolin and also sings. Musical outputs include the rock ceilidh band Teannaich and the Americana band Dry Island Buffalo Jump. Jonathan is producer, recording engineer, mixing engineer and mastering engineer for recent Dry Island Buffalo Jump recordings along with other works.
Graeme Steel
Engineer
Graeme Steel is the University of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Music Centre's Music Technician and Operations Coordinator. After completing his studies in Sound Production at the University of the Highlands and Islands, over a 20 year freelance career he has obtained extensive experience in live event and tour sound, as a mix engineer and taking part in studio and location recordings. He has teaching experience with Napier University and his freelance professional work has included extensive international touring, mixing front of house sound for major festivals such as Glastonbury and Coachella as well as mixing live broadcast audio for TV and radio.
Tutor
Dan has built a reputation as one of the UK's Leading producers, specialising in artist driven songs for Film, Radio, Television & Multimedia. Dan has enjoyed top 20 chart success as a Songwriter, Producer and Mixer and has a long list of production credits with artists including Gary Barlow, Becky Hill, Ben Howard & Take That. He has recording and mixing credits with acts including Paulo Nutini and Zayn Malik. Extensive Film & Television song placements include high profile shows like Black Mirror (Netflix) The Boys (Amazon) Lethal Weapon (Fox) Top Gear (BBC), X Factor (ITV), and Saturday Night Live (NBC). Feature films include The Inbetweeners Movie, Delivery Man, and Big Game.
Tutor
Anthony is a British Award-Winning classically trained film composer, orchestrator, and music producer specialising in composing for film and TV. His work blends the orchestral sound with modern sound design, creating immersive and cinematic scores and soundtracks. Expertise in score preparation and orchestration has taken him to world-renowned studios, including Abbey Road Studios and AIR Studios in London. During his studies at Aberdeen, Anthony’s talents were noticed by Paul Mealor which led him to orchestrate Mealor works as performed by the RSNO and Philharmonia Orchestra and featured on Classic FM. Anthony has worked with prominent industry professionals and in 2025 collaborated with Tanzanian rapper dr.chemical_tz on a cross-genre project that fused orchestral elements with contemporary African influences.
Tutor
Sam Annand is freelance sound engineer with over 20 years of experience in delivering technical sound services across a wide range of environments, including recording studios, festival sites, concert venues, theatres, art galleries, schools, hotels, stadia, corporate events and site-specific installations. He obtained a BSc with Honours in Sonic Arts from the University of the Arts, London and his specialities include Front of House sound, Recording, Mixing and Mastering.
