• Researchers (staff and students) applying for ethical approval

  This training is for staff and students who plan on making an application for ethics review and is focused on helping researchers understand how to complete an ethics application and minimise issues during review.

  Online training

  This online Moodle module covers the basics of ethics application and review at the University. This available to everyone at the University but is a mandatory course of School ethics committee members. There is a quiz at the end of each section to test your knowledge, plus links and resources throughout the module.

  This online Moodle module shows you how to use the online ethics system to create, complete and submit an ethics application.

• School ethics committee members

  Online training

  Training is mandatory for every member of a School Ethics Committee (SEC) and must be refreshed every three years. There is now an online training module available via Moodle:

  This training module is focused on key aspects of the ethical review process at the University, including why and how it is done, and includes an overview of the application form (the Word version, this is due to be updated)..

  Note that for your training to be marked as 'complete' you must pass the three end of section quizzes.

  In-person training

  If your School ethics committee, or School more broadly, would like to arrange an in-person training or Q&A type session, please get in touch.

• School ethics committee administrators

  This training is for staff who act as administrators for their School ethics committee and shows how to use the online ethics system.

  Training for the 'old' ethics database is available separately and takes place 1:1 over Teams (20-30mins). Request this training by emailing the UTREC office: utrecmail@st-andrews.ac.uk

• School ethics committee convenors

  When there is a change in the convenor of a School ethics committee, a handover meeting should be arranged between the outgoing and incoming convenors and a member of staff from the UTREC office.

  This meeting should be arranged by the convenors.

• University teaching and research ethics committee members

  When a SEC convenor joins UTREC, the UTREC office can, on request, provide them with a brief induction to UTREC ahead of their first meeting.

  These sessions can be arranged as required (in-person or on Teams) and typically take 15 to 30 minutes.
