Refugee and asylum seeker status students

The University of St Andrews wants all students to reach their full academic potential. We recognise that if you have experienced forced migration you may have faced significant barriers and disruption to your education. The University has implemented a range of support measures to help you.

University of St Andrews offers help and support to those falling under the following categories:

University of Sanctuary

University of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø was proud to gain Sanctuary status in September 2019. This award recognises our commitment to ensuring that ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø is a welcoming, safe and supportive environment for students and scholars seeking sanctuary in the UK.

Admissions

When making an application to us, please let us know that you currently have asylum, refugee, humanitarian protection or limited leave to remain (LLR) status as part of your application. This will allow us to ensure that we can offer you the correct advice and guidance through the application process, and beyond if you become a student with us.

As part of the application process, you will be asked to submit evidence of any qualifications held. If, due to your circumstances, you are unable to provide this evidence, we pledge to take a flexible approach to work with you to try and agree on a suitable alternative.

We may also ask you to submit Home Office documentation to confirm your status. This will allow us to ensure we have all the correct information to support you and is in line with our Contextual Admissions process and policy.

Documentation we would require

  • If you have refugee status or another form of Leave to Remain, a copy of your .
  • If you are currently in the asylum process, a copy of your .
  • The most recent correspondence you have from the Home Office confirming your current status.

Funding and financial assistance

If you are currently seeking asylum, you will not have recourse to public funding bodies such as Student Awards Agency Scotland and therefore would be required to seek alternative sources for your funding. As part of our University of Sanctuary commitment we also pledge to assess applicants with asylum seeker status as Home rather than Overseas for fee status purposes. 

In addition to being an asylum seeker or child of an asylum seeker. To be eligible for this concession you should: 

  • Meet the minimum academic entry requirement (this excludes our Medical programmes). 
  • Be applying to study on a full-time undergraduate course (this excludes our Medical programmes). 
  • Provide Home Office documentation which verifies that an application for asylum in the UK has been made prior to making a UCAS application to us. 

If you feel you are eligible for this concession you may request a review of your fee status by emailing fees@st-andrews.ac.uk and we will ask you to complete our Fee Status Questionnaire.  

As part of our University of Sanctuary status, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø is pleased to offer financial assistance at both undergraduate and postgraduate level to support students who are seeking sanctuary in the UK.

In addition to these specific scholarships, we have a wide range of other financial assistance scholarships available.
