Biography
Tobias is the director and founder of the , Scotland's first research centre dedicated to the growing field of philanthropy studies. His research focuses on the different expressions and traditions of philanthropy, particularly community philanthropy, and the nature and roles of philanthropic foundations and trusts.
Tobias is co-editor of the international handbook on philanthropy, , initiator and co-editor of the book series, President of the , a Trustee of , Scotland's community foundation, and an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) Japan Branch. In autumn 2025, Tobias was appointed a subject expert on philanthropy to the Research Committee on Philanthropic Engagement in Science of the German Science and Humanities Council (Wissenschaftsrat), Germanys Federal Governments chief advisory body on science and research policy.
Prior to joining the University of 窪蹋勛圖厙 in January 2014, Tobias was Principal Research Fellow at Cass Business School City University London, where he worked with the Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy (CGAP) and the Centre for Charity Effectiveness (CCE). He is a former Governor and Member of the Boards of Trustees of the St Katharine and Shadwell Trust and of London's EastEnd Community Foundation, and sat on the Advisory Board of the Centre for Public Scrutiny (CfPS) in Westminster. Between 2009 and 2015, Tobias served on the Board of the International Research Society for Public Management (IRSPM), and, from 2018 till 2022, served on the editorial board and acted as book review editor for Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly (NVSQ). From June 2020 till August 2023, Tobias was Head of the School of Management, and for the spring semester 2024 he was Visiting Professor at Kwansei Gakuin University, Japan.
