Our research agenda focuses on societal challenges and their organizational consequences. It aspires to sustainable and equitable organizing and responsible management in organizations of all kinds.
Our approach
Our research integrates mainstream and critical perspectives in a collaborative research environment. We are interdisciplinary and methodologically plural.
We research with business, public and third sector organizations:
- From large businesses to creative and tech start-ups, SMEs, family businesses and entire innovation ecosystems
- From local to national governments, parliaments and public services
- From philanthropic organisations and NGOs to cooperatives and employee owned businesses

- Advocates for responsible enterprise in everything that we do so that businesses, non-profit and governmental organizations place people and planet at the heart of value creation.
- Catalyses real-world impacts across the private, non-profit and governmental sectors, from the creative industries to philanthropic organizations and beyond.
- Generates new approaches to management scholarship and organisational success to enable future generations to deliver positive change.
Research clusters
The Department is organised into three research clusters. Each provides a dynamic and supportive environment where faculty members, PhD candidates, and visiting researchers collaborate. These clusters enable our publication and grant writing activities, and run seminars, workshops, reading groups, conferences and retreats.

Affiliated research centers
The Department hosts four internationally recognized research centres which coordinate national and international networks and have global reach in advanced specialisms.
The Centre for Social and Environmental Accounting Research is an international membership-based network that aims to mobilise accounting scholarship to enable a more sustainable society.
CRISP’s research focuses on the political, legal, economic and social dimensions of the surveillance society in a collaborative initiative between Stirling, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, Edinburgh, Southampton and Manchester Metropolitan Universities.
The Centre for the Study of Philanthropy and Public Good aims to strengthen, enhance and challenge theory, practice and policy relating to philanthropy and its relationship to public good, through international research and scholarship.
The Centre provides an intellectual and organisational home for individuals and groups across the University of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø whose research focuses on equality, diversity and inclusion issues.
