• Candidate eligibility

  The dataset already has an established multidisciplinary methodology combining analysis of formal sources (e.g. reports by international organisations) and sources generated through web scrapping. We are open to applications from students from any discipline who are interested in contemporary international peace processes, but see the proposed VIP as being of particular interest for students from:

  • International Relations
  • Economics
  • Psychology, and other Social Sciences.

  Students are highly encouraged to enrol in this module over the whole year so we can build sub-team cohesion. An ideal split would be 20/20 or 15/15 credit load over the two semesters, but we are open to applications proposing a different load.

  For IR honours students: IR Director of Teaching has approved an arrangement for students accepted on this VIP, where you can over-credit in one semester and under-crediting in the other. This would allow you to take the VIP module over the whole year and participate fully in all activities.

  • Example 1: Semester 1: VIP for 15 credits + 60 credits of modules (75 credits), Semester 2: VIP for 15 credits + 30 credits of modules (45 credits) = 120 credits over the whole year
  • Example 2 (dissertation students): Semester 1: VIP for 15 credits + module(s) for 30 credits + IR4099, Semester 2: VIP for 15 credits + IR4099 = 120 credits over the whole year

• Methods and technologies

  Students on this VIP will be effectively integrated into the project as junior analysts on small country teams. They will produce their own outputs and contribute to the MEND dataset.

  Students will engage in:

  • independent and group research on their assigned conflicts,
  • data processing (categorisation of each event per established MEND methodology),
  • data analysis (summarising data),
  • reporting (preparation of reports, other outputs, website support).

   

• Assessment

  Individual weekly reflective logs (updates and narrative reflection) – 20%

  Contribution to group outputs (data processing, analysis, written and oral presentations) – 80%
