School Research Report 2024

Research in the School of Geography and Sustainable Development addresses questions of environmental, societal and population change. The School’s work develops understandings of the mechanisms, impacts, politics and experiences of local and global systems. This ranges from modelling the changing shapes and flows of glaciers as they meet the sea, to bringing local knowledges to the fore in conservation governance and implementation, to unravelling why people in some places are having fewer children or living in better health than others. The research in the School brings innovative thinking and practice on how to achieve a sustainable and just world.

A central element of the originality and significance of the School’s research is the development of research methods. The School excels in spatial data science, longitudinal analysis for social science, inclusive survey design, participatory methods and ethical research.
