Teaching Forum series
The Teaching Forum in the School of International Relations is a collaborative space where colleagues and postgraduate research students come together to discuss teaching practice, pedagogical innovation and new developments in higher education. Established in 2016, the Teaching Forum runs a series of events each semester, often led by staff or postgraduate research students who have been recognised for their teaching successes.
What happens at the Teaching Forum?
Each forum facilitates rewarding discussions on teaching, learning, assessment, and curriculum design. It allows for best practices to be shared and implemented, and for participants to gain peer feedback on initial ideas for new modules, assessments, higher education applications, workshops, and grants.
The Teaching Forum creates a culture of teaching excellence in the School of International Relations for staff, early career researchers and postgraduate research students. It also helps staff and students respond to sector changes and challenges. In recent years, for example, the forum has held events on:
- the challenges of designing new modules
- the role of simulations in international relations teaching
- the impact of artificial intelligence on assessment.
Distinguished Teacher Lecture series
Once a year, the Teaching Forum celebrates a distinguished educator in the field of international relations through the annual Distinguished Teacher Lecture. Usually held in Semester 2, the Distinguished Teacher Lecture is a series of events held in the School to celebrate teaching innovation. In addition to giving a public lecture, the invitee also leads an informal workshop event.
The Teaching Forum is part of the School of International Relations Strategic Plan (2023-2028) and has played a key role in promoting a culture of research-led teaching. It also aligns closely with the University's Strategy (2022-2027).
Convenors
In academic year 2026-2027, the Teaching Forum will be convened by Dr Norma Rossi and Dr Nick Brooke. The previous year, it was led by Dr Faye Donnelly and Dr Nick Brooke.
If you have ideas or suggestions for the Teaching Forum, please email the convenors. More information about the Teaching Forum is shared via email to staff and postgraduate research students at the start of every semester.
