Core student training

As part of becoming a matriculated student, you will need to complete some mandatory online modules which form your core student training.

The modules reflect topics that are important to the University community and relate to the core values of our University strategy.

These modules include training in:

  • good academic practice
  • consent and bystander intervention
  • environmental sustainability action
  • equality, diversity and inclusion
  • research integrity and ethics (postgraduate researchers only)

The modules vary in length, and each requires that you successfully complete an assessment quiz at the end to demonstrate learning and understanding. The quizzes can be completed multiple times until the requisite pass mark has been reached.

If you have any technical difficulties accessing or completing the modules, you can email itservicedesk@st-andrews.ac.uk. If you have any concerns with any of the concepts associated with the consent and bystander intervention module, you can email orient@st-andrews.ac.uk.

You will access the core student training modules through the online matriculation process.

Due to the nature of the material shared within the consent and bystander intervention training, the University has created an exemption process. To request an exemption, students should complete the Consent and Bystander Intervention Training Opt-Out Form which you can find at the beginning of the training.

This form is sent to Student Services staff who then approve the request and liaise with Registry to put in place the exemption to ensure the student can complete the matriculation process.

Exemptions for this module are only considered where there are concerns that completion of the training would substantially affect the student’s wellbeing and mental health. Please note that religious or cultural beliefs are not a reason to request an exemption.

This exemption process does not apply to the other core student training modules. In exceptional circumstances, for example, where there may be technological issues that impact on a student’s ability to access or complete the module, exemptions may be requested. Evidence should be provided in such cases and sent by email to orient@st-andrews.ac.uk.

This email account is monitored by Student Services who will forward such requests to the Director of Student Experience for approval.

Please note that a request for exemption does not apply in cases where someone may disagree on principle with completing the core student training.
