Partnerships and Community
Addressing the climate and nature emergencies requires collaboration beyond institutional boundaries. At the University of St Andrews, partnerships and community engagement are central to how we deliver our Environmental Sustainability Strategy and create impact locally, nationally and globally.
We work with communities, public bodies, international partners and organisations to share knowledge, test solutions and support fair, place‑based approaches to sustainability. These partnerships allow us to connect research, education and operations with real‑world action, ensuring that our sustainability ambitions translate into meaningful outcomes.
Working in partnership for real‑world impact
Corrour Partnership
The Corrour × University of St Andrews Partnership is a long‑term collaboration focused on nature‑based climate mitigation, research and teaching. Together, we are creating a living laboratory for landscape‑scale ecological restoration, including woodland regeneration and peatland restoration.
Corrour is a key contributor to the St Andrews Forest, a flagship initiative of the Environmental Sustainability Strategy, supporting the University’s journey to net zero by 2035 through high‑integrity, nature‑based carbon solutions. The partnership demonstrates how long‑term collaboration can deliver benefits for climate, biodiversity, research and communities.
International collaboration: University of Padua
Sustainability is also a core theme of the University’s strategic international partnerships. Through our developing collaboration with the University of Padua, we are exploring opportunities to share best practice, support joint research and education, and strengthen institutional approaches to sustainability.
This partnership reflects a shared commitment to addressing global challenges through collaboration, learning and mutual benefit, and supports the international dimension of the University’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy.
Local partnership: Fife Council and the St Andrews community
The University works closely with Fife Council and local partners to support sustainability at a regional and community level. This includes collaboration on areas such as climate adaptation, transport, biodiversity, land use and community engagement.
By working with local government, third‑sector organisations and community groups, the University contributes to a more sustainable St Andrews and Fife, while ensuring that local knowledge and priorities inform our own sustainability action.
Sustainable transport partnership: Stagecoach
The University of St Andrews works in partnership with Stagecoach to support sustainable travel across St Andrews, North East Fife and the wider region. Through this partnership, the University subsidises discounted bus travel for staff and students, making public transport a more affordable and attractive option for commuting, study and everyday journeys. The scheme has helped reduce reliance on private cars, cut congestion in and around St Andrews, and lower carbon emissions associated with travel, while also providing practical support to our community during a period of rising living costs. By working with local and regional transport providers, the University aims to encourage long‑term shifts towards low‑carbon travel and contribute to a more sustainable and connected region
Community‑led action and engagement
Partnership working at St Andrews extends beyond formal agreements. Through student‑ and community‑led initiatives, we support bottom‑up action on sustainability, empowering people to shape solutions that reflect local needs and lived experience.
This approach recognises that lasting change depends on trust, participation and shared ownership — principles that underpin both our Environmental Sustainability Strategy and our wider civic mission.
From partnerships to progress
Together, these partnerships demonstrate how the University of St Andrews delivers sustainability through collaboration. By working across sectors, disciplines and borders, we are able to connect global ambition with local action, support innovation, and contribute to a fair and sustainable future.
