Vision and strategy

Vision

Environmental sustainability is a core pillar of the University of St Andrews’ institutional strategy. Alongside excellence in education and research, the University is committed to addressing the climate and nature emergencies, stewarding resources responsibly, and contributing to a fair and sustainable future for society.

This commitment is articulated through the Environmental Sustainability Strategy, which sets out the University’s ambitions to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2035, enhance biodiversity, embed sustainability across teaching and research, and work in partnership with communities locally and globally. The Strategy underpins the Sustainable pillar of the University Strategy and provides a long‑term framework for action that connects global ambition with place‑based delivery.

Our sustainability vision is delivered through three interconnected pathways:

Sustainability Positive

Our research, education, impact and partnerships are directed towards improving environmental and social outcomes locally, nationally and globally. We aim to contribute positively to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and to influence policy, practice and public understanding through world‑leading scholarship.

Carbon Net Zero

We are committed to becoming a net zero university by 2035, ten years ahead of national targets. This involves reducing greenhouse gas emissions across our operations as far as possible, while responsibly managing unavoidable emissions.

Climate Adaptive

We are strengthening the University’s ability to operate in an irrevocably changing climate. This includes adapting our estate, infrastructure and systems to remain resilient while supporting the wellbeing of our community.

Delivering this vision requires clear leadership, transparent decision‑making and active participation from staff and students across the University. Our approach is underpinned by strong governance arrangements that ensure accountability, inclusivity and continuous improvement.
