Environmental sustainability strategy

Environmental Sustainability Strategy

Creating a truly sustainable future requires collective action and bold choices. The University of St Andrews’ Environmental Sustainability Strategy sets out how we are responding to the climate and nature emergencies — and how our community can play a part in shaping a fairer, more sustainable world.

Developed with input from students, staff and partners, the Strategy commits the University to becoming net zero by 2035, ten years ahead of the Scottish Government’s national target. It provides a clear framework for reducing our environmental impact, embedding sustainability across everything we do, and using our influence as a global university to drive positive change.

At its heart, the Strategy focuses on reducing emissions wherever possible, while responsibly addressing those that cannot yet be eliminated. But it goes further than carbon alone: it is about protecting nature, supporting wellbeing, and ensuring that the transition to a low‑carbon future is inclusive and just.

Our vision

The University of St Andrews will demonstrate visible leadership in environmental sustainability by achieving net zero by 2035 — not only reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but also tackling wider environmental degradation and restoring nature. This means ensuring that we emit no more greenhouse gases than we remove from the environment, while enhancing biodiversity and environmental resilience.

A living laboratory for sustainability

The University sees its campus and operations as a living laboratory for sustainability. Alongside tracking progress towards net zero, we are developing more holistic ways to understand and reduce our environmental impact — including biodiversity, water use, air quality, waste and chemicals.

By combining research, teaching and real‑world action, we aim to generate practical solutions that can be tested, refined and shared well beyond St Andrews.

Delivering change

Delivery of the Environmental Sustainability Strategy is underpinned by a rolling Action Plan that translates the University’s long‑term ambition into practical, measurable action. The Action Plan sets out priority activities, milestones and responsibilities across the institution, providing clear evidence of delivery, accountability and continuous improvement.

The Action Plan is reviewed and updated regularly to reflect emerging evidence, policy developments and delivery learning. Progress is monitored through the University’s sustainability governance arrangements and reported to senior leadership, ensuring that action remains focused on achieving net zero by 2035, enhancing biodiversity, and embedding sustainability across education, research, operations and partnerships.
